Kindle Edition Verified download. I used this book in for a college class to increase my vocabulary. Mass Market Paperback Verified download. Pretty happy with this book. I have been working my way through it and the process and methods used within work.
I needed a vocabulary workbook for adults, and this works great, although I think teenagers could benefit greatly from this as well. Do you want to improve your vocabulary or just keep sharpening your skills and learning?
Then get it. I read this book many years ago and it's amazing that I still remember most of the words.
That's a testament to the techniques used in this book for helping its readers to permanently remember the words. I've given this book to my teenage daughter and she loves it in an educational sort of way! Word Power is still! download the normal, not the mass paperback format, don't download the Kindle version.
Great book. Helps me a foreigner learn new words very effectively.
However, I bought the Kindle version, which makes doing exercises on the book very inconvenient. My friend has a mass paper back format but the size is too small for doing exercises. I've just downloads it again, this time a paperback format, which is big enough for doing exercises.
This book was recommended in my Kaplan GRE test book, and it has not disappointed. I just finished working my way through the entire thing, and it has been immensely helpful in expanding my vocabulary and giving me a much stronger understanding of word roots and foundational etymology. Would definitely recommend! Paperback Verified download. The book is helpful. I like that it's more than a list of words, definitions, and exercises.
It also includes other information on etymology and grammatical principles. However, this book was initially published in , and it seems like various parts of the book have not been updated to reflect current notions of society. For example, it is now widely accepted that both introverts and extroverts are equally "normal," but this book defines the most normal people as "ambiverts.
For someone somewhat familiar with the words, this might not be a problem. For the unfamiliar, I would be wary of learning outdated concepts or definitions. I read this book 52 years ago when I was 15 and my vocabulary really really benefited!!!
He tells you stories, the histories, jokes with you, is sarcastic of several things, supporting many, and giving you wonderfully superb pieces of advice that you love to take. It is no preaching. It is a friendly relationship with the reader and making him learn many, many useful things.
But Learning the Ideas Behind the Words. Norman Lewis exposes to us the world we would never have given a thought about, normally.
Lewis tells us the stories behind innumerable words which are hard to forget. You might have a faulty memory about remembering words, but the idea stays with you and so does the word. And the idea of the ideas simply rocks.
